Ovulation Induction is a process of stimulation of ovaries to release eggs. It is for women who do not ovulate regularly and are given oral or inject able medications to enhance the egg release process. The main aim of ovulation induction is not just to release eggs , but to release more eggs than usual to increase the chances of conception. It is also used before processes like IUI and IVF.

In normal ovulation a women produces one egg, but after taking an ovulation induction normally 2-4 eggs are produced. During the process of Ovulation induction the doctor carefully monitors the patient after the required medication is given for stimulation. Depending upon the time, response and requirement the mature follicle is either fertilized by the sperm following natural planned intercourse, IUI or the egg is retrieved for IVF in the outside environment.

Why Ovulation Induction is preferred:

Usually recommended, OI should be performed for about 3 to 4 cycles for achieving pregnancy. In most cases the eggs are available from the female naturally but in case of no or low egg production Ovulation Induction is introduced. What should you expect during an ovulation induction process?

The process of OI starts from the second or third day of your menstrual cycle and usually lasts for 8 to 10 days. The injections or oral medication can be taken by self at home and meanwhile the monitoring of blood samples and vaginal ultrasounds is continued. The moment the tests show one to four mature follicles an injection of hCG is prescribed to trigger the ovulation. Usually after 36 hours of this final injection, ovulation occurs.
